About Us

Hi!

Im Sera, founder of tilar. I got sunstroke from a day in the water, and vowed never again! Reducing time in the ocean wasn't an option, but I couldn’t find a surf hat that fit my tiny head or looked half decent. I tried regular caps but they would fall apart. So I started making my own. I tried lots of different things and over time created my own patterns, chin straps, brims, closures, sourced and tested fabrics. I shared my hats with friends and strangers for their feedback, the most common being “You forget you’re wearing it" - best feedback ever!

What's in a name?

Tilar stands for Take It Like A Rat, a quote from one of my favorite documentaries Riding Giants. We've all been there, facing that wall of water with nowhere to go. You're going to get smashed. The important thing for tilar is, when you get smashed, your hat doesn't come off. So when you pop up you're ready for the next one. No battling obscured vision or chocking from behind. Keep calm and carry on.

What's in a design?

Extensive research, prototyping, and testing! My aim is for tilar designs to function flawlessly— lightweight, dries quickly, sturdy, and holds up well over time. The brim is flexible but keeps its shape. The chin strap is sleek, adjustable in two ways, and locks securely. The closure is durable and won’t break or come apart. We’ve prioritised environmental responsibility by using mostly recycled or upcycled materials, all sewn locally by skilled, passionate hat makers. Our ultimate goal is a closed-loop or biodegradable product. Watch this space.

Have more fun!

When you have burnt eyeballs, headaches or sunstroke, you are in fetal position while others are enjoying the conditions. Don't be that person! Tilar hats are great for all the adventures - fishing, sailing, hiking, lifesaving, kite boarding. Even the less strenuous adventures, gardening, mooching around town, hanging at the beach. Protect your bits so you can last longer and have more fun in that glorious sunshine!
